Hellenic National Meteorological Service

Founded in 1931, the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS) is a part of the Hellenic Ministry of Defense and it is staffed with civilian and military personnel.

HNMS's mission is the meteorological support of the national defense, the national economy and the whole society. The HNMS is organized in the Central Service Directions and in Operational Meteorological Centers. The Directions work in subject consists in administrative and technological support of the Operational Meteorological Centers as well as the promotion of research in critical sectors, such as numerical prediction, climatology, hydrology and agricultural meteorology. The work of Operational Meteorological Centers is the supply of meteorological support in 24h basis to whom it may concern.

HNMS is a member of all the International Organizations concerning meteorological topics, following the new progress in scientific and technological issues, cooperating with Meteorological Services of other countries, Organizations and Scientific Foundations and participates in researching and developing programs with final aim the improvement of the supplying services.

Having the responsibility of meteorological support during the Olympic Games of 2004, HNMS will provide general and specific weather forecasts related to all Olympic Events.
